It turns out that Marshall has had his fair share of fights, particularly when he was younger. In season 4, episode 8, Marshall explains how he has been in plenty of fights as he grew up with big brothers, and no one takes him seriously until the end of the episode.
This is because Marshall shows he can hold his own against the bartender, and the audience even gets to see a flashback of Marshall against his brothers. Safe to say, it was not a scene for the faint-hearted.
