On the night of the escape, an off-duty police officer did claim to see a boat leaving the Alcatraz island.
An elderly man on his deathbed in 2016 claimed to have helped the men escape as he picked them up in a boat shortly after they made it onto the water. He claimed he painted a boat white days before he set out for the San Francisco Bay and waited for them. There were rumors they fled to Brazil and managed to keep a low profile ever since.
