At one point, in season 9, episode 9, Lily tells Barney that he only ever fulfills his own challenges. However, this isn’t quite right at all, as Barney has often accepted other people’s challenges. In season 4, episode 19, he takes on a whole list of them from Ted.
However, Barney often is inspired by other people to create his own challenges, rather than being given them by other people. Often, he takes on things people haven’t actually directed at him.
