The mother was a total mystery throughout most of the series, right up until the season 8 finale. Fans seemed to expect that season 9 would be all about Ted and Tracy’s relationship, but people felt this was very rushed, right up until she lost her life.
All the showrunners let on was that Tracy fell ill with something, although never specified exactly what it was. It was aggressive enough to end her life but wasn’t important enough to let people in on.
