Georgia Holt had Cher when she was pretty young herself (20). And it didn’t help that the father of the baby was into gambling and stayed away thanks to his truck driving job. Georgia divorced him while Cher was a baby.
For a time, Cher’s mother was unstable, and she placed Cher under the care of nuns, who watched her until Georgia got back on her feet. Cher claims that it’s still a sensitive subject in her family.
