Arthur ‘Doc’ Barker and a gang made it to the shoreline but were shot at by guards as they were constructing a makeshift raft. Barker died from his injuries, and the others were sent to solitary confinement.
A failed escape in 1946 led to the “Battle of Alcatraz,” a bloody shootout between inmates and guards. Six prisoners including Bernard Coy and Joseph Cretzer took control of their cell house and entered the weapons room. They took two guards hostage and butchered them before being captured by the U.S. Marines.
