[post_page_title]Early escape attempts[/post_page_title]
In total, 36 men tried to flee the prison in 14 escape attempts. The first escape attempt from Alcatraz came in 1936 by Joseph Bowers.
He ran to the fence and managed to scale it before being shot by guards, this caused him to fall, and he died from his injuries. Theodore Cole and Ralph Roe filed through bars in the prison’s workshop in 1937 and jumped into the water on a very foggy day. They were never seen again, but it is suspected they were washed out to sea.
