Located on an island in the San Francisco bay area, the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary was once home to some of the country’s most dangerous criminals. Even though it has been closed since 1963, the site now remains as a piece of history, especially since it was the infamous prison in which three daring men somehow managed to escape.
From 1934 to 1963, Alcatraz had a total of 1,576 inmates. Some of the most notorious criminals of all time were there, such as mob boss Al Capone who went by the nickname “Scarface” and was grew to fame during the prohibition era.
