She felt as though she was a “freak show.” She felt horribly embarrassed daily and hated looking in the mirror. She hated this whole ordeal, and she wanted it all to be over for good. She claimed people would stare and laugh at her in the street if she didn’t have a hat to cover it up.
There was also an incident at an airport, when a police officer asked her to take her hat off. After taking it off, the officer apologized and told her she could put it back on if she wished to.
