Lamu Island was once a much loved holiday destination thanks to its gorgeous beaches and historic Swahili architecture. In recent years, the island has a pretty different reputation. Due to the harsh conflict between Kenya and Somalia, the location is now prone to crime and violence.
The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office actually advised against traveling to the island unless it was completely necessary. We would still recommend trying to visit, as long as you understand the risks.
