Despite sounding like a fun party beach, Bikini Atoll may actually be the opposite of a good time. It was once U.S. territory and the site of over 23 nuclear tests between 1946 and 1958. As if this isn’t bad enough, before these tests happened, the water was severely shark-infested.
The U.S. declared that it was a safe place in 1970, but just eight years later, researchers found that there were dangerously high levels of chemicals in the sea. Residents of the area were evacuated, so you can imagine it isn’t exactly popular.
