Today this industry is massive, especially in the United States, with extravagant contests for girls and women of all ages. Not that people don’t find beauty pageants weird today too, many definitely do. But when they started, they were much more than simple beauty contests.

They were a sign of the changing times, of a new type of woman who wore fashionable outfits and makeup, and didn’t just care about being a wife and mother. Pictured here is the 1928 Miss Universe winner, Ella Van Hueson.
