That’s right, penicillin which revolutionized medicine and has saved countless millions of lives in the almost 100 years that have passed since – was discovered by accident. Actually, it’s more accurate to say it was the result of a mistake.
The Scottish microbiologist Alexander Fleming left some culture plates out while on vacation for two weeks in 1928. When he came back, he saw they had developed mold – and that mold had prevented the growth of bacteria. Talk about the greatest mistake in human history.
