Well, the idea of robots was invented. And the same arguments and fears against them that exist in pop culture today, existed then too.
The writer Karel Capek wrote a Sci-Fi play, where the plot centered around robot factory workers. At the beginning of the story, the robots dutifully do whatever work the humans order them to. But then, much like a 1920s version of I,Robot, the robots turn on us and start a war against humanity.
