We’re so used to them now, but paying to do things that make your head dizzy and your stomach drop, wasn’t seen as entertainment before the 1920s.

Life was hard and scary enough as it was in the beginning of the century, so the rise of amusement parks was yet another sign quality of life was improving for people. Suddenly they had the time (and money) to seek thrills and be just the perfect kind of scared for an afternoon.
