Cash had originally begun to wear black because he wanted to match his backing musicians, the Tennessee Two, when they were performing on stage. Being that the only item of clothing that they all had matching of was a black t-shirt, that is what they settled with.
Of course, he was spotted wearing a lot of black clothing especially during the 1970s, but this was not always the case. Sometimes, he would be found wearing clothes that were a lot lighter, and occasionally he would even wear an all-white suit.
