If you assumed that Johnny Cash was not the singer’s real name, you would be correct. He was actually named J.R. Cash at birth, when his parents could not agree on a name.
His mother wanted to call him Rivers, after her maiden name, whilst his father wanted to name him Ray, for his own father. They named him J.R., but when he wanted to join the Air Force in 1950, the recruiter made him change from initials, so he chose to be called John R. Cash.
