Although Cash never publicly affiliated himself with either of the political parties in the U.S., he was pretty close to a number of different presidents. He was first friends with Richard Nixon, followed by Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
The president he was closest too was Jimmy Carter, who he was distantly related to through his wife, June Carter. Nonetheless, Cash kept a healthy distrust of these presidents, although less so while they were in office.
