When Cash was a kid, his parents were not specifically well off, financially speaking. The family had seven kids, and were often struggling with money, especially during the time of the Great Depression.
His upbringing as his inspiration
More than once, his family’s farm was flooded, which essentially gave Cash the inspiration behind his song “Five Feet High and Rising.” Actually, a lot of the way that Cash was raised, in a modest household, was a great influence behind his songwriting.
