You know when a guest overstays their welcome? Now imagine that the guest is a legit dictator and that telling him it’s time to head home could cause an international diplomatic incident. That’s what happened in 1978 when the then Romanian leader, Nicolae Ceaușescu, had dinner with the Queen and Prince Philip at Buckingham Palace. According to a palace official, the Queen was walking the corgis in the palace gardens later that evening when she spotted the dictator and his wife about to cross her path – and ducked into a bush to avoid them.
