Despite her success, however, Moceanu’s life in gymnastics was far from easy. In 1998, she filed for emancipation from her parents, as a result of personal and professional trouble. She revealed that her father’s training regime throughout her career had been incredibly harsh, and that he had been something of a tyrant throughout her childhood.
Moceanu also claimed her father had squandered her earnings through mismanagement and overspending. The court granted Moceanu her emancipation, although in later years she would reconcile with her parents.
