Sara Blakely was working in a sales job that required her to wear pantyhose in the hot Floridian weather when she had an idea that would change her life – she started to experiment by cutting the feet of the pantyhose so she would be able to wear open-toed shoes.

She spent two years and around $5,000 in the research and development of her hosiery idea, which led to the foundation of Spanx, an American intimate apparel company currently valued at $1 billion.
