Pinning one thing down as the reason Philip Anschutz is so rich is pretty much impossible to do. The guy has his hands in a huge number of different businesses and industries.
The best we can do is to just sum him up as a businessman and leave it at that. He’s been slowly building up an empire since 1970, a year when he purchased a large farm. Another farm of his ended up being a massive oil well, the capital from which let him purchase a ton of other businesses.
