Another action of her mother’s that always roused Gail’s curiosity was how afraid her mother was of the sunlight. At home, she always kept the widows covered with thick blinds, and whenever she went outside, she’d always ensure that no part of her skin was visible under the sunlight.

She’d wouldn’t leave the house without a hat, umbrella and gloves, and would oftentimes seem afraid of something greater than a small tan. However, she brushed off her mother’s strange behavior, convincing herself that it was nothing but a woman’s love for her fair skin.
