Alvera looked broken and sad as she narrated to her the story of how she came to become a white woman, despite hailing from a black family. She seemed to have realized how many mistakes she had committed, but was not ready to lift the blinds off of this darkened portion of her life.
Thus, even before she narrated her story, she asked her daughter to not reveal her secret to anyone else until her death. Although Gail found the request to be bizarre, she kept her mother’s secret till Alvera’s death in 2014.
