Alvera’s lies began when she met and fell in love with Harold. Since her skin was not very dark and she wore makeup, he couldn’t tell that she was a black woman.
As much as Alvera didn’t want to keep the truth hidden from him, she knew that if she wanted a future with him, she’d have to let go of her heritage. Harold was extremely racist and would often slander Alvera’s race in front of her unknowingly. Yet, Alvera loved him so deeply that she was willing to undergo anything to be with him.
