Alvera revealed that what the census records and her birth certificate said was indeed true- she was a black woman who hailed from a black family which resided in New Orleans.
Circumstances had forced her into assuming the identity of a white woman, and she had continued her play for at least half a century. And nobody, until then, had been able to uncover her lies. She had kept her entire family, including her now late husband, in a web of lies. Gail listened, in utter disbelief, her mother’s sad confession.
