Author Eliza Leslie wrote in 1864 that, basically, a beautiful woman hanging out by herself should not be trusted by any man, especially if she’s wearing makeup, has a “meretricious expression of eye,” has lots of long curls on her hair, or if she is “over-dressed.”

“It is safest to avoid her,” she stated in her “The Ladies’ Guide to True Politeness and Perfect Manners,” where she listed many general rules of behavior for women of her time.
