Society sure had a lot to say about how women should behave, and we mean it – there were *a lot* of very specific rules dictating even the proper way of sitting on a chair.

According to an etiquette guide published in 1857, when seated, a lady should not cross her legs, nor take a “vulgar attitude.” Also, the woman should occupy the chair entirely, and she shouldn’t move too much, but he also shouldn’t stay completely still.
