This is not just an advice on dating, but on how to act in general – it comes from a book with the pretentious title “How to Be a Lady, Containing Useful Hints on the Formation of Character.”

This work of art, published in 1850, argued that women shouldn’t get used to joking because this cultivates “severe sarcasm,” and that is “a bad habit of the tongue.” They should find other things to at the dinner table, as long as it doesn’t involve eating cheese, of course.
