It seems like the further we go into the past, the weirder the dating advice becomes. Nowadays, people who are on a dinner date know to avoid certain ingredients like garlic and raw onion because they can leave a strong smell in the mouth.

But back in 1889, authors Frances Stevens and Frances M. Smith were telling readers of their book “Etiquette, Health and Beauty” that “ladies seldom take cheese at a dinner party.” Why? We don’t know, and we don’t want to know. Don’t mess with our cheese!
