Staying healthy while on vacation

Everybody needs a break now and then and a vacation is a perfect opportunity to step out of routine and the stresses of daily living for a while. It’s a time to relax and indulge a little. The problem is if you indulge too much, you can undo all of the hard work you’ve put in to keeping healthy and then have to work harder when you return. But not to worry, there are ways that you can keep healthy without impacting heavily on your vacation. Here are some of the things you can try:

Walk or cycle to where you need to go

It’s difficult to maintain an exercise routine when you’re vacationing, but you can still keep your physical activity up by walking or cycling. Many popular tourist destinations around the world allow people to rent bicycles to get around the city. Sure, it takes a bit longer to get around, but it means you have more time to take in your surroundings. What’s more, you save a significant amount of money on transport, leaving you more money to spend on other things!

Carry a water bottle

So with all the walking you’ll be doing, it’s very important to keep hydrated. But whether you walk everywhere or not, you should still always have water with you. It’s easier than people think to become dehydrated, especially with the busy schedule of traveling. Staying hydrated is one of the most important components of staying healthy and if you become dehydrated it can impact your vacation quite badly. Be sure to be clued up on the water situation in your travel destination, as to whether the tap water is safe for drinking or whether you should stick with bottled water.

Stretch

Stretching is something you’ll definitely want to do, especially if you are walking around a lot. Stretching after you get out of bed can loosen up the joints for a day of walking, and stretching before bed can relax your stiff muscles from walking around that day. Stretching keeps the blood flowing well throughout your body and can help you to fall asleep more easily.

Don’t forget the sunscreen

If you’re traveling to a destination with lots of sunshine, be sure to put on a strong sunscreen in the morning and carry it around with you to reapply as needed. Even in destinations that are more temperate, it is still important to apply sunscreen if you are spending most of your day outdoors because believe it or not, people are able to sunburn even when it’s overcast.

Keep your eating balanced

Food is always a wonderful indulgence on a vacation, and definitely not something you should be over-concerned with during your relaxing break. Just follow the simple rules of making sure to get enough fruits and vegetables and to have sugar in moderation. A balanced diet gives you the energy you need for all of your vacation activities, and can limit the damage that all the unhealthy food does.

Make sure to get enough sleep

This is one of the most important tips for staying healthy while on vacation. Your days are packed and you need to recuperate in order to keep going. Getting enough sleep is especially important if you are traveling across time zones so that you can set your sleep cycle back on its natural rhythm. The last thing you want to do is be tired and grumpy after a long vacation!
