Adorable times pets discovered mirrors

We love our pets, and it’s only natural for us to think that our own pups and kittens are the cutest in the entire world. Which is interesting if we stop to think about it, because they actually have no idea how adorable they are (well, the cats maybe do). Having a little animal at home is fascinating and highly entertaining, because we get to watch what it is like to function solely on instinct. Things that we as humans have learned to deal with from a very young age are completely foreign to a dog, or to a piglet, and it’s always hilarious to watch them interacting with objects we take for granted. Placing a mirror in front of our pets, for example, can yield the funniest reactions, as we can see from the examples below. From the doggo who seems to be giving himself a pep talk to the cat discovering her own ears, we’re loving these pets who are seeing themselves in the mirror for the first time.

‘I’m… a cat!’

Apricot was adopted shortly after his birth, and he grew up hearing that he was “a part of the family,” so he figured he was a human just like his “mom” and “dad.” Sure, he was significantly shorter than them, but hey, people come in all shapes and sizes, right?

‘I’m… a cat!’

Then came the day when he decided to climb the bathroom sink. One look in the mirror, and Apricot realized he was never a human. He was – gasp! – a cat!

There can only be one

This pup was the family baby, and he got all the attention he wanted from his humans. He was happy being an only child, until he saw that other dog staring at him from the other side of the room.

There can only be one

“Oh no, you don’t,” he said to the strange dog. “This is my house, and my humans!” And for the next few hours he sat there barking at his reflection, because he needed to prove his point that “there can only be one.”

You gotta know your angles

One of the first things they teach you in modelling school is that you need to know your angles. It’s not enough to have a pretty face – you also need to know how to work it for the camera.

You gotta know your angles

Practicing in from of the mirror is a must if you want to do a good job during a photo shoot, and this kitty is showing how seriously she takes the craft. We can see that she has the potential to be the next Clawdia Schiffer.

‘You can do it, Al’

There’s something about this dog’s posture, and the way he’s standing with his front paws on each side of the sink, that makes it look as if he’s giving himself a little pep talk.

‘You can do it, Al’

We can almost hear him whispering something like “You can do it, Al. You’ve been a good boy. You deserve this promotion. Go talk to the humans and tell them why you should be the next assistant branch manager. Yeah. You’re gonna nail this interview, Al.”

Who’s the fluffiest of them all?

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fluffiest of them all? Why, it’s this little albino fox who’s so cute, she actually looks like she jumped out of the pages of a children’s book.

Who’s the fluffiest of them all?

It’s not difficult to picture her as the adorable and spirited sidekick of an adventurous Disney princess. The way this photo was taken makes it easy to imagine, too – those fairy lights bring an element of magic to the scene.

Being your worst enemy

The phrase “to be your worst enemy” relates to self-sabotaging, and it applies to situations where you unintentionally make things harder for yourself, creating problems where there once were none.

Being your worst enemy

This cat apparently heard of the concept, and now she’s taking things a little too literally. She thinks she’s her own worst enemy, and now she want to destroy her reflection in the mirror, like “why did you eat all the wet food in one bite??”

The hairy dog

This sweet pup who is seeing herself in the mirror for the first time is definitely not self-aware. She doesn’t understand that the hairy dog looking back at her in the mirror is actually herself, and she thinks she is just meeting a new friend.

The hairy dog

This friend, however, doesn’t seem to know how to play. The pup keeps rolling her ball to the hairy dog, but the hairy dog doesn’t roll it back. Not cool, hairy dog. Not cool.

Almost like a Renaissance painting

This photo of cat looking at herself is so perfect, it almost looks like a Renaissance painting. First of all, she’s so beautifully poised, and the golden details around the mirror could easily be mistaken for a fancy frame in any museum.

Almost like a Renaissance painting

Notice the triangular composition, as well as the use of contrast between the dark background and the light color of the wall. This looks like a work of art – and the cat knows it!

Puppy eyes

His humans would tell him things like “oh no, don’t give me those puppy eyes,” but the little doggo had no idea what they meant. They would tell him that whenever they were eating something tasty, but it’s not like he was begging them for a piece of their sandwich; he was just looking at them.

Puppy eyes

It was in this moment, when he saw himself in the mirror for the first time, that he understood what they meant. “Wow,” the puppy thought. “If I had a sandwich right now, I would totally give it to myself.”

‘Hoo’s this?’

Owls are a symbol of wisdom, but the fact that they have a smart look to their faces doesn’t necessarily mean that they know everything in the world. This owl, for example, doesn’t seem to be sure about what’s going on right in front of them.

‘Hoo’s this?’

They’re confused about their reflection, and we are completely mesmerized by the way they’re moving. We have no idea how they’re doing that thing with their neck, but we’re sure about what they’re thinking – “Hoo’s this?”

The cat from the Upside Down

In the popular Netflix series Stranger Things, the Upside Down is an alternate dimension – a parallel universe that has a similar layout to our world, but is inhospitable to humans, and just overall completely terrifying.

The cat from the Upside Down

The kitty here seems to have found her own Upside Down reality, and what she discovered is that she’s adorable no matter how she looks at herself in the makeup mirror. On a scale of one to ten, this cat is an Eleven.

So ‘hamsome’

When it comes to things that make us go “awww,” this piglet seems to be checking all the boxes. Well, she’s tiny. And she’s pink. And she’s wearing a little bow around her neck.

So ‘hamsome’

As if all of that wasn’t enough, she had the cutest reaction after seeing herself in the mirror for the first time. She wanted to come closer to her reflection, to give it a little “eskimo kiss.” It was a clumsy one, because her nose is so big compared to the rest of her face, but it only made her even cuter in our eyes.

‘I’m not that ugly… am I?’

Cats are often seen as narcissistic animals (it’s not their fault, really – the thing is that they were worshiped as gods in ancient Egypt, and they have not forgotten this), so we would expect to see a cat checking themselves in the mirror and looking quite satisfied with that they see.

I’m not that ugly… am I?’

This kitty actually looks a bit distressed, as if they’re thinking “I’m not that ugly… am I?” No, kitty, you’re beautiful. The mirror is just distorting your reflection.

But first, a selfie

Even though most smartphones nowadays have great front-facing cameras, the mirror selfie is still the best way to get a good shot of your outfit without asking for another person’s help.

But first, a selfie

This dog was on his way out for a walk when he realized his outfit looked awesome that day, and they decided to take a photo of it. Sure, they weren’t actually wearing anything, but who cares? They’re a cute dog talking a mirror selfie.

‘Are these my ears? Wow, they’re adorable’

Pet lovers will tell their cats that there isn’t a single thing they don’t love about them – their tiny paws, their fluffy bellies, their little triangular noses, their adorable pointy ears. This cat has listened to her human talking about her ears for a while now, and today she finally got a good look at them.

‘Are these my ears? Wow, they’re adorable’

She seems fascinated by her discovery, as if she’s thinking “Are these my ears? Yes, these are my ears. Wow, they really *are* adorable.”
