With 1996’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Disney made the bold decision of adapting not a public domain fairytale but a public domain book! Based on Victor Hugo’s novel of the same name, the movie received a somewhat underwhelming reception by audiences – at least by Disney standards – which we honestly think was a shame.

In the end, it may have been undone by trying to remain faithful to its source material, which was simply too complex and dark to be made into a kiddie film. Also, it’s apparently a cautionary tale about never escaping the friend zone.
