Mulan really is a story about a woman having to pretend she’s a man for anyone to listen to her clearly valuable, informed contributions on an important subject. While probably not an actual historical figure, the Chinese Ballad of Mulan dates back 1,500 years, making it one of the oldest stories Disney’s ever adapted.

Emily here is perhaps being a bit unkind in her sum-up, as Mulan does end up dropping her ruse and revealing the truth, and is celebrated for who she is. Let’s hope the little girls in the audience focused on that…
