At-home aromatherapy: How to use essential oils

The idea of aromatherapy is appealing to many people, as it’s a great way to try and naturally calm yourself. It’s been shown to help in reducing anxiety in people and even to ease some physical pains. Not to mention that there is a more sensual side to these oils, when used correctly. So, how do you use essential oils?

How to do the inhalation method

There are several ways to use essential oils, and inhalation is one of the most popular methods you could choose. It’s simple and easy, and we’re going to explain how to do it. You will need to get a diffuser, which is a device that does all the work for you. There is no one standard diffuser, and some will need to use water while others require heat. All you need to do is add your chosen essential oils, and you should be well away. However, there are methods you might like to try or find you prefer.

Steam treatment

This method is best for if you’re struggling with some kind of congestive illness, allergies, or if your sinuses are blocked or infected. All you need to do is get yourself a bowl of hot, steaming water. Then, just add between 3 to 7 drops of your chosen essential oils. You can add more or less, depending on the potency you want. Some people struggle to tolerate strong smells, while others find it to their liking. You need to make sure you keep your eyes shut while you breathe in through your nose and out your mouth.

Dry evaporation method

If you don’t want to go through all the hassle of getting a diffuser, then there is another option open to you. All you need to do is get a cotton ball, add a couple of drops – we recommend between 2 and 5 drops – and leave it in a bowl next to you. Oils are potent, and you should soon feel the effects. Everyone has a different preference when it comes to this kind of thing.

Drop into a bath

Why not make your bath the diffuser? It can be a wonderful and relaxing experience to bathe in waters infused with essential oils. There are many ways you can choose to do this, but one expert suggests that you should mix around 12 drops of essential oils with a teaspoon of either vegetable oil or honey. This is really important, as you shouldn’t just drop the oils in as they require a dispersant to make them adequately effective in your bath.

Aromatic bottled spray

You can actually bottle up your essential oils to create a totally tailored spritzer spray for your home. It’s great if you love the smell of essential oils because you can enjoy them throughout your entire home. You can decide to combine between one and three oils or simply use one. Then, you will need between 10 and 15 drops of your chosen oil or oils. Add an ounce of water to the spray bottle you have put your oils in and start spraying!

Adding it to your body

You can even add the oils to your body. Make sure you consult a professional if you have any concerns about your skin or are pregnant. You will need to dilute with another oil, such as grapeseed or almond oil. The ratio is an ounce of water for every 20 drops. Shake and massage! You will smell divine.

Essential oils are fantastic and have all kinds of helpful properties, so the next thing to do is choose the ones you want!
