In The Crown, a 29-year-old Charles first meets 16-year-old Diana while dating her older sister, Sarah. He arrives at the Spencer family home and Diana exploits a moment he’s alone to “bump into him,” still dressed in a tree costume from her school A Midsummer Night’s Dream production. That’s almost complete fabrication.
Charles and Diana did first meet in Althorp while he was dating Sarah, but it was reportedly in a plowed field during a grouse hunt. Early accounts say Diana may have been smitten with Charles, but she later claimed her main impression was, “What a sad man.”
