[post_page_title]Fact check: Diana’s beautiful and revolutionary gesture in New York[/post_page_title]
Diana’s 1989 lightning rod of a solo trip to the U.S. is recreated in The Crown, and shows just how much of a celebrity the Princess of Wales was even across the pond. Apart from glitzy fancy dress dinners, the show also depicts Diana’s visit to a Harlem hospital’s pediatric unit, housing children suffering from the human immunodeficiency virus.

At a time of rampant ignorance and stigma, Diana embraces an afflicted 7-year-old boy, thereby breaking barriers. This unfolded almost exactly the same way in real life, and helped shatter the misconception that casual contact could transmit the disease.
