The fourth episode is all about Charles and Diana’s engagement, and includes a gut-wrenching engagement interview scene. Diana is shown nervously hiding behind Charles while being bombarded with questions by a reporter. Near the end of the interview, the reporter remarks that the two look “very much in love.”
Diana agrees almost immediately, but Charles dryly says, “Whatever ‘in love’ means.” It seems so cruel and bizarre it has to be dramatic license… but it’s absolutely what happened. Years later, Diana recalled thinking, “What a strange answer” and said it “deeply traumatized” her.
