After agreeing to marry Charles, The Crown shows Diana picking out her own engagement ring (foreshadowing perhaps?) from the crown jeweler. She settles on a Ceylon sapphire ring, because – as the show tells it – it reminds her of her mother’s engagement ring and matches her eyes.
Diana really did choose her own ring, which arrived at Buckingham Palace on the pretense that Prince Andrew was getting a signet ring for his 21st birthday to keep the news from leaking. Diana, incidentally, kept the ring after the divorce and Prince William ended up proposing to Kate Middleton with it.
