The Crown’s Australian episode depicts some of the response to Charles and Diana’s planned visit. Specifically, we get incoming Australian prime minister Bob Hawke’s hot take.
Hawke, a staunch proponent of disengaging from the British Crown, says, “You wouldn’t put a pig in charge of a herd of prime beef even if it did look good in a twin set and pearls.” If it seems far-fetched a leader would call his country’s head of state a “pig,” well, it’s because it didn’t happen. In fact, Hawke got on quite well with the Queen thanks to their shared interest in racing.
