The real money in Hollywood is often made off of merchandise, and not the movies themselves. That’s what happened with Star Wars, and it made director George Lucas a fortune thanks to a bad decision on the part of 20th Century Fox.

The studio didn’t have high hopes for Star Wars back in 1973, so when Lucas agreed to take a pay cut in exchange for merchandising rights to the franchise, they agreed, and Lucas profited. In 1978 alone, the profits from action figure sales reached $100 million.
