Are your laces worn out and coming apart at the ends? The strands then resemble a small mop. This makes it hard to pull them through the holes on each side of the shoe.
Instead of buying new laces, just get a small piece of plastic, cut it to the length you want, then burn the bottom lightly. You can use a candle or a lighter for this. Now the threads are bonded to the plastic, allowing the laces to go through effortlessly.
