If you have PVC pipes, using a metal hydroxide lye to clear the drains could result in some serious damage. The owner of Creo Home Buyers, Melanie Hartman, explains that with the heat that is created while clearing the drain “can cause PVC pipes to soften and melt.”

So, before going ham with the lye, or any sort of commercial drain cleaner, it is best to ensure that your specific plumbing system can handle what is being poured down the drain.
