After spending the first two decades of your life doing things that you had little choice over, your twenties present the first time in your life when you can really take control of you own life. No more parents telling you what you should and must do, no teacher breathing down your neck. In short, you finally get to have that freedom you day dreamed about all throughout your high school life. It’s an exhilarating feeling, and it should be.
It’s also a little frightening, because you realize it’s up to you to either make or break your life. Whatever you do is your responsibility and you no longer have the luxury of leaning on the adults around you because you’re finally an adult too. You shouldn’t be afraid to take charge of your freedom, however. Your twenties are the one time in your life you’ll have to yourself and to yourself only. You’re your own adult, you’re your own chaperone. You’ve completed college, you have your first real job that’s not a part time gig at a coffee shop and the world is yours to take. Here are some reasons why your 20s are the best years of your life and why you should live them up to the last second.
1. Your main commitment is you
School’s over, you have likely moved out of your parents house and you have your first job. You have no family to take care of, no mortgage payments to worry about. In short, it’s just you…and you. The only person most of your decisions at this time affect is you. And that’s fine, since once you get started on settling down you’ll have other people to think about and a million other commitments that adults get to deal with. So, your twenties are basically your serious-responsibilities-free years. You get to do the things you always wanted to do, the things you love to do. There’s a big chance that if you don’t do them at this time, you’ll never have the chance to do them again. Take all your twenties to pamper yourself. You can get serious with life at 30.
2. you get to meet new people
All your life you’ve known your childhood friends from your neighbourhood and the ones you made in school. In your twenties, the pool of people you meet and get to interact with gets deeper and wider. Especially once you’re working, you’ll meet lots of people at your workplace.
3. It’s the time you discover yourself
Your childhood goes by in a blur of, well, childhood, and your teenage years in a cloud of trying to fit in and being accepted by your peers. After literally following the crowd for those earlier years of your life, in your twenties you get to finally understand yourself as a person and know what you want in life. This is a time when peer acceptance doesn’t rank too high with you because you realize the decisions you make at this time will affect the rest of your life. Yes, we said it’s a time when you don’t have serious commitments, but it’s also the time to lay a foundation for the kind of life you want to have once the serious obligations come around. You get to sit back, relax and decide which path you would like to take, instead of which one is cool to your friends.
4. You have the world at your fingertips
There are so many adventures to be had and choices to be made in your twenties that will never be available again later on in life. This is the time you get to pick what pleases you and discard what does not. After all, it doesn’t affect anyone but you. Spend your money how you want, – your own money, yet another perk of twenties – when and where you want. Make the world yours before you have to share it for the rest of your life.
