Peter met his first wife, Polly Platt, in Summer Stock Theatre, where she worked as a costume designer. They then exchanged vows and remained married for nine years before Cybill appeared in Peter’s life.
Peter worked with Cybill while producing The Last Picture Show, during which they fell in love. Peter then divorced his wife in 1971. He began seeing Cybill that same year. Although they were not officially married, they stayed together for seven years before separating.
