There are people who blatantly use emojis even though they may not need to, or they do not understand how to use them. It causes a big difference in what they mean; sometimes good, sometimes bad. Tom must have thought his friend wanted him to put a horse to sleep when the emojis of a horse and bed was sent.

Instead, his friend was trying to get Tom to allow Fontane to sleep on the horse. It could have been either of their faults for the misunderstanding. Who can put a horse to sleep?
