When horror is intermixed with tragedy, it becomes all the more heart-rending. We’ll never know what took this narrator’s beloved away from him, and we’ll probably never know what sinister force brought her back either.
Or, indeed, if she was ever truly brought back to begin with. Perhaps he just imagined her being back, the pain of separation being so severe that he slept with her dress firmly clutched in his hands. Or maybe just as he wasn’t quite ready to let her go, she wasn’t ready to do the same either.
