Despite the fact it covers about three-quarters of our planet’s surface, we know shockingly little about what’s under our oceans. Sure, we know a fair bit about the layers that are closest to the surface, but what about those much, much farther below?

Take the Hadalpelagic Zone, named after the Greek underworld, for instance. It stretches from 19,686 feet to 36,100 feet below sea level, and we know next to nothing about it. In fact, we’ve explored certain parts of our solar system more than we have our deepest oceans. And maybe there’s a reason for that…
