This story is a beautiful inversion of the two-sentence horror story trope. Firstly, it’s not scary so much as it is thought-provoking. Secondly, the narrator turns out not to have been a human at all.
It’s as perfect as those old Twilight Zone episodes, where we ended up learning something about human beings and what makes us tick. Well, this particular story does teach us a poignant lesson, but it’s not about dogs. Just like the best stories, it uses something else to tell us a little something about ourselves.
